A ball valve is a form of quarter-turn valve which uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball to control flow through it. It is open when the ball’s hole is in line with the flow and closed when it is pivoted 90-degrees by the valve handle. The handle lies flat in alignment with the flow when open, and is perpendicular to it when closed, making for easy visual confirmation of the valve’s status. Ball valves are durable, performing well after many cycles, and reliable, closing securely even after long periods of disuse. The Lion Bulk Handling Cargo control system (CCS) is a standalone digital system specially designed to control all the functions and sequences of the material handling system, such as instrumentation signals, alarms, etc., which are required for loading, unloading and venting. See below for a schematic image. The CCS software incorporates a human-machine interface (HMI) which allows control of the CCS via touchscreens or a keyboard & track ball if preferred. The CCS has predefined process steps that require the operator to manually select which valves to open or close using the HMI. – The HMI displays process information about the current process, e.g. pressure, level, weight and/or alarms. – The HMI can provide specific process information to other systems
The cyclone dust collector is a traditional de-dusting unit designed to ensure that less material dust is released into the environment. Since the cyclone has a centrifugal effect, a dual vortex is required to separate air from material/fine dust. The main vortex spirals downward and carries most of the dust particles. The inner vortex, created near the bottom of the cyclone, spirals upward. This upward stream is cleaner air, which nonetheless still carries a small amount of dust particles. All the material/dust that has been separated by the cyclone is received and stored in the dust collector underneath. The dust collector is a small pressure tank that is pressurised when full and can be discharged to another destination.

A flap valve is a valve which opens by flipping a round or rectangular gate/wedge out of the path of the dry cargo. The distinct feature of a flap valve is the sealing surfaces between the flap and seats are planar, so flap valves are often used when a straight-line flow of dry cargo and minimum restriction is desired.

A load cell is a transducer that is used to convert a force into an electrical signal. This conversion is indirect and happens in two stages. Through a mechanical arrangement, the force being sensed deforms a strain gauge. As the strain changes the effective electrical resistance of the wire, the strain gauge measures the deformation (strain) as an electrical signal. Lion Bulk Handling integrated the load cell measurement into the material handling systems of offshore and marine vessels. The load cells are also suitable with our land-based applications.
Loading bellows or loading chutes are used for efficient, dust-controlled discharging of dry, dusty bulk solids/materials into ships, barges, trucks or stockpiles. These loading spouts are provided with tapered inner cones to contain the flow of material and an outer bellow to provide for dust removal.
The key factor for good handling of dry material is flow. Obstructions must be avoided so as to achieve the required loading and discharge capacities. Loading filters (also known as lump catchers or rock catchers) will ensure that these obstructions can be collected when loading by this screen. The Lion Bulk Handling loading filter (single or double acting) will prevent any foreign object from being loaded into the dry material handling system. If any obstruction is located, it can easily be removed by hand.
The mucking ejector works based on the principle of convergent/divergent nozzle, as this provides the Venturi effect – creating a vacuum in the diffuser throat where the suction line is provided. At the suction line, the ejector is connected to a suction hose or to a piping system for vacuum cleaning of the inner side of the tanks. The outlet of the ejector is connected to a piping system, which brings the material back to the storage facility or to the de-dusting Unit. The ejector is supplied with air from the compressor (inlet).
This assembly is used to decrease air pressure from the rig’s work air supply to the pressure required for pneumatic conveying. This is usually around four bar. The pressure-reducing station consists of two reducers, a safety valve, ball valves and pressure gauges. Two reducers are installed in parallel so that one can keep working while the other is replaced or repaired. The ball valves are used to select the correct pressure reducer. The pressure gauges are installed before and after the pressure reducer. The reducers are set by our engineers during commissioning and locked afterwards.
A re-loader tank is a pressure vessel designed by Lion Bulk Handling for loading and discharging dry material with a dust emission of less than 5 mg/nm3. The re-loader tank is loaded by means of a vacuum generated by a vacuum pump, with the tank filled from atmospheric bulkhead tanks. During the next cycle, the cargo is conveyed by the compressors onshore to the rig silo or any other destination. The re-loader tank has a unique integrated filtration system. This Lion Bulk Handling design is certainly one of the most cost-effective ways to fluidise dry materials, while also saving weight.
Screw conveyors are among the oldest methods for handling dry bulk materials such as cement, barite, bentonite, fly ash and drill cuttings. The screw conveyor loading system consists of a family of stock components designed for assembly into custom configurations that meet specific material handling requirements. Our drive sections feature a rugged motor and gearing suited to handling the weight and density of your material. All troughs are constructed of heavy-duty steel plate coated with industrial-strength epoxy paint. Sealed hanger and end bearings support the long-wearing steel auger. Super-duty coupling shafts connect the auger between sections. Options include electric pushbutton start and speed control, safety gates and an emergency stop device.
Sight glasses are used in high-speed mixing systems for two reasons. First, they allow visual inspection of the blending process to ensure that there are no malfunctions. Secondly, they give the operator a visual indicator of when the operation will be complete. This is helpful when a manual control response, such as closing a valve, is required. Full view sight glasses are constructed in clear, high-density, abrasion-resistant, moulded urethane. They come standard with grooved, clamp-style connections and can be adjusted with flanged adapters to fit easily into any standard piping. The six-inch models are offered in standard and 45-degree elbow versions, and 6 x 4-inch reducers are available as well.
Surge tanks are mostly used in mud mixing systems on offshore drilling rigs and supply vessels. The Lion-designed surge tank, combined with our mass flow fluidiser and backflow prevention unit, ensure a quick and efficient mixing of barite and bentonite. The Lion backflow prevention unit eliminates the backflow of drilling mud into the mass flow fluidiser and into the surge tank if the suction valve on the shearing mixer is accidentally left open when mixing stops. The backflow prevention unit utilises a vacuum transducer that senses when vacuum has been compromised and closes the automated valve on the shearing mixer suction side. The ultra-clean filter tank ensures that less than 5 mg/nm3 of material dust is released into the environment. The air which flows through the vent lines of the material handling system goes through this filter package. The filter tank can handle high air flow and volume of material loading of fine particles. The dedicated filter cartridges are easy to change and incorporate integrated pneumatic pulse cleaning. The filter tank collects the dust particles during conveyance operations. After the filter tank is completely full, it is pressurised and the material can be conveyed to another destination. This de-dusting unit is remarkably quick, easy and clean compared to traditional filter bags or de-dusting units.
